Things I learned today…

Today would have been my grandmother’s 92nd birthday.

I’m not sure we realize the impact on our lives, our families’ lives, and the lives of others – I mean, fully realize the impact – when we choose a job. Do you stop to think about this ever? I think back, and I actually stopped working in the legal field and chasing the lawyer dream ON PURPOSE to open my studio. That single decision affected a host of people, and that’s not lost on me.

Y’all, this conference sets souls on fire, its asks hard questions, it stirs your thoughts, and it ignites your soul. That’s not dramatic. That’s the truth.

Sometimes people you looked up to a little can do things that make you question their genuineness and goodness, and that can be disappointing. Best I can do is hope there is a sensible reason or a logical explanation for their behavior.

In 2013, when I went to my first Dancelife Teacher Conference in Phoenix, I sat down at a table and met Melissa. I immediately loved her. I’m still her friend, and she’s “my person”, you know? I don’t even know that much about her life, and we live on opposite sides of the country, but I got to see her on a screen tonight (Facetime), and I was thrilled. Maybe I’ll do better at staying in touch and being a better friend.

Do y’all have “your person”? I have several, and I love them.

I won $275 at the Craps table tonight, so that’s cool. It was so fun to play.

Now that I write, I listen to what people say and pay attention to the words they use more than ever. It’s a blessing and a curse.

While people talked today, I scribbled. I’ve got a ton of notes on things to write about. I didn’t want to include them here, because they really deserve their own posts. I’ll look forward to writing about that stuff.

I think it’s more important to work on being fair and understanding, compassionate and authentic, than it is to work on being nice. Being “nice” is not it.

Good or bad, you can learn from everybody.

That’s all. We learn every day, don’t we?
